Muhammad Yunus, chief advisor to the interim government, has called on citizens to submit their income tax returns online.
Ho noted that there was no longer a need to visit banks to pay taxes or go to tax offices to submit returns.
“You can now submit your tax and file returns from the comfort of your home,” Yunus said in a video message to the nation on Monday.
“I have a few words to say about taxes. The taxes you pay are the primary driving force of the country's economy. Yet, people have to face various hassles to pay taxes to the government.”
Highlighting the ease of submitting taxes and returns online, the chief advisor said that it has now been made mandatory for all government employees in Dhaka, Narayanganj, and Gazipur cities, as well as for employees of all scheduled banks, mobile phone operators, and several multinational companies.
“Citizens across the country are being encouraged to file e-returns and pay taxes online,” he said.
Yunus continued, “Let there be a competition in every district and city to see how many taxpayers from an institution are filing their returns online, with the chance to win national awards.”
The chief advisor mentioned that the government is gradually preparing to collect all types of taxes online, while promising a "smooth and hassle-free experience for everyone”.
For several years, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has been encouraging the submission of returns online. To make filing returns and tax compliance easier for the 2024-2025 tax year, the NBR launched an online return submission system on Sept 9.
Individual taxpayers can prepare and submit their returns online by visiting the website www.etaxnbr.gov.bd.
To do so, taxpayers must first verify if their mobile number is registered with their National Identity Card. Verification can be done by dialing 16001.
At the launch of this portal, the NBR stated that the e-return system allows individual taxpayers to prepare and submit returns online or to print them for offline submission.
Additionally, payments can be made through online banking, credit cards, debit cards, or mobile financial services.
The system also provides instant proof of submission, income tax payment certificates, TIN certificates, copies of previously filed e-returns, and the ability to print or download proof of submission.
This year, the NBR has issued a special order making online income tax return submission mandatory for all government employees of the Dhaka, Gazipur, and Narayanganj City Corporations.
The same order applies to all employees of scheduled banks.
Additionally, it is now mandatory for employees of British American Tobacco Bangladesh, Unilever Bangladesh and all mobile operators to file returns online.
